The development of a 5G technology holds out the promise of a wealth of new services and applications for the mobile industry. It also offers the mobile industry the chance to reverse an unwelcome trend. As the industry has moved through its successive generations it is arguable that while the radio interface has become progressively more secure, the interconnect path has actually become weaker.
With 5G, thanks to the work we have been contributing to within the GSMA and the 3GPPP, a new security protocol known as the SEPP is being developed which will harden end-to-end 5G network security for all applications. We are also looking at how those advances can be retro-fitted to earlier generations of mobile technology. These advances will ensure that the promise of 5G technology can be delivered safely and securely across all its many applications.
